Unique 1-6, 2025

·

Throughout my art-making years, from the beginning to where the work falls now, the subject matter of the work has vacillated from an uncertain minimalism to unquestionable surface engagement. My travels have not been intellectually easy. I wanted to land and stay put for a while and I did when the hatched line drawings prevailed.

The hatched drawings took over my drawing pursuit for several years. I loved doing them. They were clearly acts of meditation on my well-being.

Yet, the tumultuous times do take over. And the settling was for me one where I want to develop an image language that included everything I discovered beforehand but in another way… in a way that echoed my penchants, my desires, and my skills.

Joan Didion wrote in The White Album, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” And although she was referring more to writing than to visual art, one could refer to visual art just as easily. I have been telling stories in my work in its entire existence. Many people did not care to interpret them because they were too difficult to “unpack.”

In the appreciation of the work cited in this post, one has no choice except to examine all the parts of any one drawing and make sense of the whole, whether that assessment is based on the design, the literal imagistic meaning, or the combination of the two. The connections seem paradoxically disparate, yet the connections are made on the same surface. The connections are ‘connected.’ Each drawing is like any story over time that means nothing until the end. In the drawings, there is never an end. Because there is no beginning.

I have chosen to call these six drawings the Unique series because from one to the other, they do not resemble each other. The elements might be similar but the whole point is to impose change. Find the changes. Discover new directions. Which I did discover. A burst into the future which no one can see yet.
